How We Work
Dog behaviourist Carlisle, solutions for dog training Carlisle, Cockermouth, Workington, Keswick, Maryport, Kendal, Whitehaven,Windermere, Ambleside, Lancaster, Ulverston and surrounding areas.
After you contact us, either by phone or e-mail, we will get back to you for some information regarding your problem(s) with the dog. We will then be able to give you some idea of the time needed and cost to deal with your problem. Most of our cases involve a 2 – 3 hour session.
If you are happy to go ahead, we will then arrange a time to visit you and your dog at your home. We have found, from past experience, that it is much more effective to work in the dog’s own home environment.
From the moment we arrive at your home we will start assessing the dog. This usually means that we initially ignore the dog. Please don’t be offended by this – it is very important that we maintain a “distance” between us and the dog whilst assessing it. We are both dog lovers and would love to greet your dog by petting it but it really does affect the work that we do. At this stage we will ask detailed questions about your dog’s behaviour and lifestyle. Also, at this stage, if we think we are unable to help you, we will be honest with you and say so.
Usually we will start our work by taking a short walk with you and the dog. The way in which the dog walks on the lead can give us lots of information. If the dog pulls on the lead we will correct this. If you want to achieve leadership status with your dog, this is a vital part of our work.
After this, we will deal specifically with any behavioural problems that you wish us to modify using appropriate kind methods.
When we talk about leadership, we would like to make it clear that we do not approve of the “bullying” methods that some people advocate in order to become “pack leader”. Our aim, with regard to leadership, is to build up trust between you and your dog, so that the dog feels calm, safe and secure in your environment and will naturally accept, indeed welcome, you as leader. This requires calmness, consistency and confidence on your behalf and we can help you achieve this.
Before leaving your home, we will provide notes to help you continue our work. We will also provide you with any necessary follow-up notes either by e-mail or post.
